Trail Work System Help "...leaving a footpath for generations to follow." |
What is the Trail Work Management System?
It's a single location where all can view the most up-to-date information on BMT trail work. It can be used to report, plan and track all work items. Click to go there. If ever any trouble using it, please let us know.
There are two primary screens: Trail Work Needed and Trail Work Completed. Each can be sorted in a variety of ways by clicking the up or down arrows at the head of a column. The bright orange arrow shows the current sort column and direction.
When work has been done, it will be posted on the Completed side where there is an elaborate set of filters at the top to help find any work you'd like to see.
Guidelines for Posting Trail Work
Regular trail maintenance items that will be taken care of (or have been done already) do not need to be entered. Please check to be sure a work item is not already listed, then:
• If you're not a section maintainer, please post the item.
• If you are a section maintainer, ALWAYS POST THE ITEM when:
♦ It's not on your own section, or
♦ It is on your own section and:
• You're not planning, or are unable, to take care of it yourself, or
• You're planning to do it yourself, but not for two weeks or more, or
• You'd like some help with it.
• If you are a section maintainer, DO NOT POST THE ITEM when: FAQs

♦ You will take care of the item yourself within two weeks, or
♦ The item will be done on a scheduled work trip (trip leader or maintenance director will post).
Simply go to the Work Needed page, provide the information in the Report New Work Item Here box, and hit the Submit New Work button.
No, anyone can. If not logged in, the item(s) will be marked Pending (with green-highlighted Reported date) until verified.
Please do! The Report New Work Item box provides a place to enter this info. Please feel welcome to leave your name and email address for follow-up. (Note: In accordance with our privacy policy, your email address will not be published online or shared.)
Easy, just Contact Us and we'll send you the information.
Messages are sent immediately to the Maintenance Directors and the Section Maintainers.
Change your password.
Just click on the item you want to change. A small window will pop open in which you can type what you like. Then hit OK or Enter to accept what's shown, or Cancel or Escape to reject it.
Before a Pending item can be volunteered for, it must be verified and the status changed to Open. First-reported items may have errors in location, actual work needed, or other information. An Open status lets everyone know that the work item is legitimate, not a mistake or a prank.
First, only the Section Maintainer may change the status of work items on their own section(s). (Please ask the appropriate Maintenance Director to change status on any sections other than your own.)
To change an item on your section to Open, click on the green-highlighted Reported date, add a letter "o" (without the quotes and no spaces) after the date, and hit Enter.
Click it! (in the Volunteer for it now column) Your name(s) and the date will automatically be added to the chart. To un-volunteer, click it again and erase your name.
There is a special courtesy that maintainers extend to one another. None works on another's section without permission. Contact either the Section Maintainer or the Maintenance Director and be sure it's OK to do the work on someone else's section. (The work done on BMTA monthly trips is always OK!)
Please get in touch with your Maintenance Director for this information. The BMTA will not publish or make anyone's email address available online in respect of privacy.
Click in the Reported date column and add a "p" after the date (again, without the quotes and no spaces).
Only when the work described in a certain item has been completely finished should the status be changed to Closed.
Click in the On date column (farthest to the right) and add a "c" after the date (without the quotes and no spaces). That item will then be moved to the Trail Work Completed page.
Email confirmations are sent out whenever new work requests are entered, deleted (from either the Needed or Completed side), opened, volunteered for, or closed.
Occasionally, an entry will be logged that is not needed (bogus report, duplicated, entered in error, etc) and
needs to be deleted. Those section maintainers and administrators who log in with the right privileges will be
presented with a small trash can on the left side of the screen beside those entries that can be deleted. Hovering
the mouse over this icon will display a short reminder of what action will be taken. Clicking on the small
trash can will result in the associated item being flagged for deletion and will not appear on the report any
longer. (If you do not see the trash can on the left margin of the item, you will not be able to delete it;
send an email to your maintenance director explaining why you think the item should be deleted.)
The "trashed" data is not completely deleted from the system, but rather flagged in a way to be ignored in all
reports. The database administrator can remove the flag and retrieve the record if needed.
Yes! Please talk to your Maintenance Director about Super-Maintainer status. This is awarded to a select few who work on many sections.
