How to Register Your Thru-Hike

Walking the entire trail, whether in sections or as a continuous hike, is an accomplishment of which any hiker can be proud. If you've hiked all of the Benton MacKaye Trail and would like to have your name listed on this page*, please fill out the BMT Thru-Hiker Request for Listing Form and send it in.

Note: The BMTA does not certify or affirm any hiking achievement. Hikers listed on this page have completed, signed, and submitted the BMT Thru-Hiker Request for Listing Form, which states that they have walked the entire Benton MacKaye.

Ordering Patches and Rockers

The diagram at right shows the possible combinations of the BMT patch and hiking-related rockers. These items can be ordered using either the BMT Thru-Hiker Request for Listing Form or the regular Order Form.

Conventions on Patch and Rocker Arrangement

A hiker who finishes walking the entire Benton MacKaye Trail becomes a "300-Miler". This designation is independent of speed, duration, direction of travel, and all other factors. Walk the whole trail, become a 300-Miler.
Any 300-Miler is entitled to attach the 300-MILER rocker to the BMT patch. (One 300-Miler rocker per trail completion. Example: Two rockers would mean two full trail completions, roughly 600 miles.)
Those accomplishing a Thru-hike on the BMT are entitled to display not only the 300-MILER rocker, but also the THRU-HIKER rocker. (A "Thru-hike" is defined as a continuous, end-to-end traverse of the trail with no more than a few days off during the trek.)

BMT/AT Loop

BMT/AT Loop in this context means the 500+ mile figure-eight formed by the southern sections of the Benton MacKaye Trail and the Appalachian Trail between Springer Mountain and Davenport Gap. (Due to limited numbers there is no rocker for the BMT/AT Loop at this time.)

Our recognition policy:

Gives equal recognition to thru-hikers and section-hikers.
Recognizes access trails or officially required roadwalks as viable substitutes for the official BMT route in the event of an emergency, such as a flood, a forest fire, or an impending storm on an exposed, high-elevation stretch.
Operates on the honor system.

Our recognition policy does not consider sequence, direction, speed, or whether one carries a pack.
